Summer of Ross Comes To An End

Posted on May 5, 2011

You can only sit around and eat cheese in your underwear for so long. Then even that paradise gets old. I have been able to spend the last year and eight months without a 9 to 5 gig. I was part of a company that sold and as a result it afforded me this time to spend with my family, lose eighty pounds, and generally hit the restart button on my life. Back in late February I started to think about what I wanted to do going forward. What would phase two look like for me? Did I want to get involved with another company in the same industry that I was in? Did I want to go back to school and get a Masters in English? Did I want to teach? While thinking about it and still having some time, I started this website. I remembered while working, over ten years ago, spending a hour or so a week sending out an email with some sports betting picks on football. The picks were based on some office pool thing I was in and it was fun to give my opinion while cracking a few jokes at the expense of some NFL players and other cities. Work got busy so I stopped after about a year. I always like to write, I graduated an English major in college, thanks to my father. I called him first semester freashman year as a business major at the time and told him how much I hated the Business 101 class I was in, and that I was looking at a C grade at best. He then gave me the best advice I could have ever gotten. He said “Ross, what you do in these next four years will have no bearing on what you do the rest of your life, so pick a major your like and get a degree”. I liked to read books and write papers, so English it was. He was proved even more correct when I graduated and spent the next 15 years doing nothing related to being an English major. But now here I am. At the dreaded “crossroads”. I want to keep doing this and I enjoy it very much. Sports has been a passion of mine my entire life. I like to watch it, write about it, and yes, even lay a wager or two on it. But as my wife says, and I have known for some time now; “this thing isn’t exactly paying the bills”. So where do I go from here? How can I keep doing this and get into phase two of my life/carrer? I am not sure at this point, but I know I need to work on it. I know I need a better website, I know my writing is crude and riddled with errors somtimes. I am starting to reealise that if I want to reach a larger audience I need help. Help in the form of writing for a better platform then I can provide. I think I need to try and make this passion work somewhere else. I know what I want to do with my life now, I just have to fiqure out how to get there. So suggestions are welcome as are all job offers, of course. Going forward entries are going to be sparse. No longer will I have a dailiy entry as I am going to focus on a job search effort. I will try to make the lowly sum I have continue on and grow by making sporatic bets, starting with this one:

Boston Bruins To Win The Stanley Cup vs. Vancover Canucks ($200 to win $350)
If you have read this site in the past two months, it has been quite a saga with me and this team, and even this sport. But I must say I am a convert, I really see the merits, the skill, the stratagy as I never have before. The physical play of the Bruins beats this team up into a game seven of epic proportions. The Canucks can skate and score, and they will do plenty of both in this series, but by the final game they will wear them down, have then looking over their shoulders and seeing shadows that exisist in the minds eye only. I am spending my last $200 on this and just going to sit back and watch. Is this a heart bet or a head bet? I think you can guess on that one, because when you have come this far, learned this much, and put in the time, routing for cash leaves you a little hollow, regardless of who wins.

News & Notes

- The funtionality of this site is in bad shape, but as you have read above, it’s really not a big concern of mine. I think I am unable to move content to the Archive page anymore because I have filled it up or reached some limit. The help avalible is pretty bad ,but again who cares.

- This is no joke. I am looking to continue writing and activly in job search mode. Feel free to contact me either in the Contact or Blog Pages.

- I will update from time to time especially on this Bruins series, but not daily. The site has grown into somthing I can honesly say I never thought it would. Other then a daliy email I sent to about 15 friends I never did any attempt at promoting this site and I have been very humbled by the response. Although we are not talking thousands a day or anything, I was pleased and encouraged.

- Thanks again, Go B’s, and have a great summer.
