I am waiting so I can see how much money I may have after the Preakness to bet on either the NBA or Baseball. Bruins are on now which drives me nuts I an TiVo-ing that. Tune in later after the horses.

Check out this annual scence at the infield at the Preakness, Looks like fun (15 years ago).

More Cowbell

I do fear the reaper. He is close by. Watching my every move. Laughing and waiting.

The Kitty is at $244.46 and $135.00 of that total is tied up in a bet on the Boston Bruins to win their series with the Tampa Bay Lightning. The B’s lead 2 games to 1 so at least that is promising. However I am left with $109.46 to bet with. The Preakness is tomorrow and I doubt I can do much damage with that paltry sum. So I have to try to increase it tonight. It’s my only hope to stave off deaths approach. No Bruins to bet on, no NBA, so that leaves Baseball. The Red Sox are playing the Chicago Cubs at Fenway for the first time since 1918. Hey, that year rings a bell. Sounds like a omen to me. Omen, derivative of ominous. This does not seem like a good idea. Stay away from this bet, my gut tells me. But on the other hand, screw my gut. My gut sucks. My gut has got me to loose 78.5% of my starting stack. I am going to take out my phone and use my coin flip app to decide this one. What the hell, right? Why not at this freaking point.

Heads = The Red Sox and Cubs go over 8.5 total runs

Tails = they go under 8.5 total runs

Tails it is. I am betting the under.

Wait. I can’t do it. The under makes no sense. It is a nice evening in Boston. The bone chilling rain has moved out and the temps are up. Lester has been a walk machine lately and is not happy with Umpires right now. Davis is no great shakes for the Cubs and he will be nervous and over amped for this big night. The Sox have rolled off six straight and the bats are coming alive. The Cubs will do there part for a few runs right? My gut says over. I hate my gut. But it’s my gut. I gotta go with it.

No surprise here:

Boston Red Sox Vs. Chicago Cubs Over 8.5 Total Runs ($57.50 to win 50)

The under is a slight favorite… so that bodes well. This is no joke I really did flip and I really did change my mind. God in Heaven be good to me.

News & Notes

- Shot a 45 on the warm up 9 hole course at 6:00 am. I then proceeded to play 18 and had four pars on the front and shot a 51! Yes, that is possible. Then I had one par and shot a 54 on the back for a 105. I am bad.

- Only 13 minutes for Seguin last night?

- Can town soccer season end any faster?

Geektime Part 2…And The Bruins

Posted on May 19, 2011

I have watched maybe 40-50 different clips of Intellivision games. I was in nostalgia land big time. I watched clips with no sound, clips with instruction on how to play certain games, clips of random people just playing games, clips of news programs about Intellivision, clips of the programmers being interviewed, clips of a guys singing about Intellivision, clips of the old Intellivision commercials staring George Plimpton and a young Henry Thomas (E.T. fame), I even spent 34 minutes watching a game of Utopia as two guys talked over it! They were pretty funny by the way. This has all lead me to two conclusions. First is that there is no purpose for discussing or listing any Atari game whatsoever. I am sorry if you were an Atari fan and that’s all you know, but lets face it, those games were beyond bad. Just take a look at Atari football and get back to me…please. The second conclusion I came to from my gross overdose of Intellivision videos, is that describing them in a long winded article with careful well thought out detail of what makes one game better than another is futile. I could never bring back the feeling of those games with my words, the way a few well spent hours on You Tube could. So instead I will just give a list, which for the record was not easy to put in order.

10. Lock & Chase
9. NFL Football
8. Advanced Dungeons & Dragons
7. Major League Baseball
6. Astrosmash
5. Snafu
4. Skiing
3. Space Battle
2. NBA Basketball
1. Utopia

Warm-up the bandwagon again as I am hopping on tonight once again. The Golden Boy will hit the ice once again and from all reports Mr. Concussion will be back as well. The talk is that Thornton will be the healthy scratch, but who knows with frenchie behind the bench. Is this going to be the game that some defense gets played on both sides and the goalie’s figure some things out? I hope not! The one thing (other than the bet) that has me interested in this series is the scoring. These are some exciting games when playoff speed and the players actually caring come into play.

It will be interesting to see this game in Tampa as well. If you have not heard a radio dufus from Tampa who calls himself Cowhead, or some other similar jackass radio name, got the 10 Tampa fans they have to call the Bruins to have the above sign removed from around the Garden. And the Bruins actually complied!! Now I may be a wussy Johnnie come lately pink hat Bruins fan, but that is just gay. Who cares what they think? Isn’t this kind of ribbing what sports are all about? My God, this a sport where guys punch each other and loose teeth, and the Tampa “fans” were offended by this? And the Bruins caved? Pretty pathetic.

On the diamond we have a real pitchers duel. Beckett vs. Verlander. The Tiger ace pitched a No-No two starts ago, and in the start after that he was asked, after pitching 8 innings of 2 hit 1 run ball, when the thought of getting a 2nd no hitter popped into his head. He said the 3rd inning! This guys is dialed in right now. I wonder if Beckett keeps the Sox DL list full and blows out his arm trying to match this guy? By the way, last nights finish with Pap on the mound was another hecklers paradise. Cold and rainy, and with a delay once again, some of the 10 beer types were able to get in the good seats. The result was a guy who was totally psyching out the Detroit guys hitting in the 9th as Pap fired gas at them. He would yell “Oh Yaaahhh” right as the ball was released and on it way. He did this so loud and convincingly that as a batter you could not help but think that gas was coming. On three different occasions the batter swung violently and missed badly. I know this sounds nuts, but check it out if you can find it.

News & Notes:

- Prediction: Seguin eats some serious glass tonight as the coach for Tampa instructs his goons to not let boy wonder fly through the zone, and this results in a another Bruin coming to the rescue, fighting, and spending time in the box.

-Intresting bets to watch tonight that I am not taking but will be watching: Dirk Nowitski Over/Under Points and Rebounds 38.5? Also Red Sox game Over/Under is 7? What would you take? Time stamp your selection if you have one on the blog page.

- Trying to play 27 tomorrow again, but weather looks bad, so they may or may not be a daytime update.

The Kitty is south of $300 again and $135 is stilled tied up in the Bruins to win the series bet. So I need a win desperately tonight. I think I have it.

Nathan Horton (Boston) Will Have A Point Tonight (Goal or Assist) ($52.50 to win $50)

I feel like Horton has pretty much been all over the place in these playoffs. He leads the team with 13 points and frankly with Seguin in the mix and Bergeron back the focus shifts away from him and opens things up a bit.

Lost the Pedroia bet despite him getting on base twice. I have a busy morning and I do not want to rush the very important topic I plan on covering today (slow news day in the sports world). Later on today I will submit a list of the top 10 Intellivision and Atari games of all time. My family owned Intellivision, but friends had the Atari so I kind of grew up on both. Anyone who has played both knows that Atari is a piece of crap for the most part. This is not a topic to be handled lightly, so when I return later today I will give this most important topic the time and care it deserves. Oh, and I will be making a bet as well, because that is what I do here…not well, but still. Go Bruins.

Tide Turns..?

In a Happy Place?

I am feeling it right now. I have no right to be saying that based on the stats below. But I just am. I am willing this weather away in my mind, and like a weatherman I am also right 51.42% of the time. Tyler Seguin appears to be throwing the team on his back as suggested in the article from 5/16/11. That same article also had me predict that Dice K would be pulled from the game due to arm trouble. He was not pulled and I lost the bet. But he was pulled 24 hours later and is now on the DL due to an elbow injury. I guess I was a day late. I won my bet last night, which was a best bet pick. I thought that Dallas and OKC would thrown down old school west coast style hoops, and they did just that. The over/under number was 193.5 and I took the over, which covered by 39.5 points!! And this was in regulation! I have never seen an over bet crushed like this in my entire betting career. That makes 3 Best Bet picks in a row, a win in poker last night, a $20 bet on a 15-1 shot in the Derby that saved my Kitty, and a Bruins win helping me as well. How can I not be optimistic. Not to mention the Poll below (as of this writing) has even numbers between those who think I will be out of cash by early June, and those who think I can make a comeback, so that is positive, at least for now.

The Bruins game was an exciting game to watch. For an admitted anti-hockey guy, even I can get into a 6-5 game. Seguin really was special. Not just the goals, but the passing as well was very crisp. He even did the little things like banging around to keep the puck in the zone. That 2nd period had to be one of the best periods by a rookie in the playoffs ever. Welcome to Boston Golden Boy. However, despite all the happy thoughts and positive thinking going on here today, there is a dark cloud looming. Tampa looks like the better team. Are the Bruin’s going to score like that the rest of the way? Will the mastermind behind the Tampa bench not figure out the B’s attack? Can Tim Thomas stop anything? Is he worn out? Is Tampa just to fast? Remember the Bruins won that game but it was by the chinny chin chin. Tampa has put up 5 goals in each of the two games. The defense of the Bruins continues to give the puck away both in their end, and the neutral zone, which has been dominated by Tampa. They came down and scored in 13 seconds last night to start the game off! That is ridiculous. I am worried about my $135 to win $100 bet on this series and I may have jinked them after all. But my jink is no match for the real reason they may lose, poor play on D.

So as I talked about earlier, the Dallas/OKC game was a barn burner. Two hundred and Thirty Three points scored! So how do you feel if you are Kevin Durant today. You shot 10-18 from the floor, 18-19 from the line, you collect 8 boards, dish out 5 assists, have 2 blocks, and 1 steal, to go with your 40 point night… and you lose. How is that possible? This is how, check out Dirk’s line:

12-15 shooting, 24-24 from the line, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 blocks, 48 points.

Dirk Nowitski was as dominant a player as I have ever seen in a conference finals. He was hitting everything, broke a record for most consecutive made free throws in a playoff game, that was held by Paul Pierce. Even more amazing, and giving it such an old school feel, was that he did not attempt one three pointer the entire game. All two point buckets, crazy stuff too, fall aways raining from both left and right. He had a hand in his face on every shot as well. It was simply masterful. The rest of the team looks really good as well. It is no wonder they slapped around the whiny, in-fighting, Kobe/Phil show, in 4 games straight. That is a reason to root for these guys alone. Want another one? How about J.J. Barea from Northeastern standing at 5 foot 11 inches pouring in 21 points last night! These guys are fun to watch. Mark Cuban in the NBA finals will be annoying, but these guys are worth the aggravation.

Bet for day.

Dustin Pedroia (Boston Red Sox) Will Score A Run vs. Detroit Tigers ($50 to win$50)

Dustin has been struggling lately but is showing signs and is starting to hit the ball hard again. He is 2-3 lifetime against Coke, who is on the mound for the Tigers. Also A-Gone hitting behind Dustin does not hurt either. Watch for a blast to knock in the little man.

The Real Basketball Junkie

Posted on May 17, 2011

“The Basketball Diaries” staring Leonardo DiCaprio was a true life gripping tale of Jim Carroll and his downward spiral into drugs that derailed a promising basketball career. But lets be very clear about something, Jim Carroll did not have one tenth of the talent that the kid from Fall River had. Jerry Tarkanian of UNLV coaching fame once said of Chris Herren “he is the best white guard since Jerry West”. The stories of how good he was are endless. At 6 feet 2 inches and a thick build, he was a slasher before the term was popular. He could score, shoot, and pass with the best of them. But the minute he set foot on a college campus (BC) he was lost. Weed and booze, became LSD and shrooms, which became coke, which became Oxycontin pills, and finally heroin on a daily basis just to function. During this progression he still managed to go from being let go by BC, to being picked up by Fresno St and getting to 9th in the country at one point. While still using and getting in trouble in what seemed to be an annual story, he was selected with the 33rd pick by the Denver Nuggets in the 1999 NBA draft. The Celtics gave him a shot after Denver didn’t work out to well. Then after playing overseas while on drugs constantly he finally got arrested in a Dunkin Donuts parking lot in Rhode Island on heroin and in possession of it. There have been so many times that I have heard the “Chris Herren is turning his life around” story, that I tend to just chuckle. But today on the Dennis and Callahan show on WEEI radio and NESN television he appeared to tell his latest story. And I bought it. He has a book out (of course) that was co-authored (of course) called “Basketball Junkie”. Me thinks this is a must read. I will get this and read it and provide a review in these pages. He is coming up on three years sober and I wish him well, but part of me hopes the book does not suceed. Chris Herren with money coming in ,attention and adulation, and feeling like a big shot, is not a good scenario for him. Is this just another Chris Herren is turning his life around” story. I am not sure. I would be a fool to say that I think he is out of the woods, because for Chris, the woods are dark and deep and he has miles to go before his next fix.

Speaking of Junkie’s I played online poker last night. I actually noted my start time on the blog page. I played one heads-up match of No limit Texas Hold-em for $32.50 to win $30. The match was 57 hands and I played well and took it down. Its always nice to flop the nuts with a chip lead. Here is the last hand (I am numberline).

News & Notes

- So this helped offset the $50 loss on the Dice K bet as he went well over the 93.5 pitches (of course). By the way I have removed the restriction to only vote once on the poll below. You can vote until your hearts content on this one.

- I still have $135 tied up in the Bruins to win this series. So I am laying off action on tonight’s game as I already have a vested interest, but I am very worried.

- Arnold has a new movie coming out “The Sperminator”.

Bet for the day

OKC Thunder vs. Dallas Mavericks Over 193.5 Total Points ($55 to win $50)

Both teams revert to the west coast style for this game in what should be a fun series to watch. I hope that OKC does not get wide eyed and choke on the big stage. If both teams shoot even OK this should be a winner. Best Bet

Hockey player Tyler Seguin

Snot still running down his nose

Let the kid play? Or go with what got you there? In the 5-2 drubbing on Saturday most Bruin’s fans came away with one bright spot. The rookie sensation Tyler Seguin got some ice time with Patrice Bergeron out following his concussion from the Flyers series. Seguin (19 years old) made the most of it, flying around the ice like a Lighting player and scoring a great un-Bruin like goal. Now we are faced with every fan from Boston to Bangor calling for the kid to be in the mix more often. The problem lies in the numbers game. If he is in, than who is out. If Bergeron is healthy he has to play right? Patrice wins the all important face off about 90% of the time. You cannot give that away, especially with the Bruins propensity to enjoy handing the puck over to the other team in there own zone. So get Ryder out of there, maybe? Ryder was the much needed spark in the Montreal series. Does the coach really want to mess with what got him here? When asked about more playing time for Seguin in the press conference after game one he seemed clearly annoyed by the question and responded with a “no comment”. Does management step in and force the issue because it’s what the fans want? Or do they let the coach make the call. One thing is clear, if Seguin plays limited minutes in game two and the Bruin’s lose then get ready for the media mayhem that will ensue. Messing with lines, switching things up, and feeling the pressure to do so, is not what you want at this stage of the playoffs. They are 8 wins away from the cup and Tyler will be here a long time to come. Is now his time to shine? If it is, and he puts the Bruin’s on his back, then we have a new golden boy in Boston. If he plays more and they lose, he will come out OK, but the coach will be vilified for trying to bring him along to quick and overreacting to one good game. In the end its the defense that needs to be addressed here, and this should be the teams focus. Tighten things up and maybe they can move on, stay sloppy and they go home regardless of what Seguin or Bergeron does.

New & Notes:

- Is the Tampa Bay Lighting coach the John Calipari of Hockey? Young, smart, and totally able to out-coach most of his opponents?

- So Boston Rob took it down last night. He dominated Survivor Redemption Island is a way no other person has ever done or ever will. I tried to find a cut down version of jury member David giving his speech but I could not find it. So what we have below is the final tribal council where the Jury of people who were kicked out of the game get to question the final three so they can decide who to give the million bucks too. Scroll to the 10:58 mark for David speech and it pretty much sums it all up. Rob could not be sitting nest to two bigger idiots, it was perfection. I like David’s Monty Python reference to start it off….nice touch. My site does take bets on Survivor winner, and I missed the boat on that as I was on the Rob train in these pages weeks ago.

- As I stated yesterday my betting site was not taking 4th round action on the Players Championship for some godforsaken reason. I of course picked K.J. Choi to win, but could not bet a dime on it. This is how I am running these days. Good finish, fun to watch, but Toms miss was brutal. By the way, his wife is voted best looking golf wife in an issue of Sports Illustrated almost every year, and the vote is a confidential poll of other PGA pros’s. I just don’t see it. Also Tim Finchem, the commissioner of the Tour likes to say of this tournament that it is “the best field of players in golf”. But can you really say that when Lee Westwood (number 1 in the world) and Rory McIlroy (number 6) just decide to skip the event?

-I have had many a reader in recent days say they have some suggestions for me in order to improve this site. Some I have yet to fully speak with, and others I have and I am implementing their suggestions today. A poll on when will I run out of $ in the Kitty I found to be quite humorous (as this will never happen) but feel free to weigh in. Another suggestion was to have a graph of my performance much like a stock, so readers could see in a quick visual how bad I am doing. I am still working on that one.

- It is getting into golf season for me and this will have an impact on the site. I still plan on making entries every day. However there are some events, such as long weekends, Bachelor parties, etc. that may result in Ross Vs. The Loss going dark for a few days. For the record I did not play 27 on Friday as I slept through the 6:00 am tee time missing that 9 hole warm-up and only played 18. I had a 56 front 9 that was an obvious disaster. But I happily pulled it together a little and shot a 44 on the back which included 3 pars and one bird.

- One other note, I cannot wait for Football season, this time of year kills me. I will be having a fantasy section during the upcoming season with picks and pans up the wassuu. Looking forward to that.

One bet for tonight:

Daisuke Matsuzaka (Red Sox) Under 93.5 pitches vs. Baltimore Orioles ($50 to win $50)

I think Dice K has arm issues right now and may come out of this game early. If that does not pan out there is always the chance he just gets shelled. This bet is risky because if the Sox smash it around the yard and get a lead they will leave Dice in until his arm falls off.

Sunday Blues.

Posted on May 15, 2011

Sunday Blues - FogAs I start writing this my betting site has note posted any match-up bets for the final round of The Players Championship yet. I can only assume its because they had to finish round 3 today and that has caused a delay in being able to make match-up’s quickly and post the odds. This is a total bummer right now. The Bruins lost badly and the coach saying “if you take away those 3 quick goals we were in that game” is the dumbest statement ever. It is right up there when Dan Duquette famously said, after a losing season, “we spent more days in first place than any other team”. The B’s were sloppy on defense and looked slow out there at times. My Bruins “to win the series” bet is already in jeopardy right out of the gate, but one game does not a series make. The Sox may be a rainout tonight, but we’ll see. I keep splitting bets and losing small money. I need a two or three win day like no tomorrow, I just can’t get over the hump. There is the first game seven of the NBA playoffs (that blows my mind) today at 3:30 pm. I think the Thunder take this but Ido not like giving 6.5 points to the tough Memphis team. The rain is pumping right now where I am, and I just checked again and still no Players match-up bets. This sucks. I think K.J. Choi may pull this one off for the record.

I am taking these bets for today and will have a nice long normal big Monday entry tomorrow including an update of my Golf on Friday. Later

Russell Westbrook (Memphis Grizzlies) Total Made Free Throws Under 6.5 ($60 to win $46.15)

Refs let the boys play in game seven reducing attempts for Westbrook and therefore makes at the line. Also, I think Durant may try to take this game over in the end.

New York Yankees To Win vs. Boston Red Sox ($50 to win$60)

Sox and Lester are the favorites but I think Garcia has the Sox number a little and the Yanks bats wake up.

Everyone likes the Alex Baldwin (ABC closing) speech, but this one is the best dressing down from a subordinate to a “supposed” boss ever.

I felt a little like Spacey’s character after Furyk lost a two stroke lead on the last four holes to lose by two vs. Stricker! Playing 27 today starting at 6:00, wish me luck. Here is the bet for the day:
